Mr. Maher Nasser became Acting Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications on 1 April 2017. He leads the Department of Public Information (DPI), which has offices in 60 locations worldwide and is responsible for promoting global awareness and understanding of the work of the United Nations. Mr. Nasser has more than 29 years of work experience in the United Nations System, most of which has been in the field of communications, advocacy and public information. He has served in various capacities with DPI, the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) and the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Gaza, Jerusalem, Amman, Cairo, Vienna and New York. Starting in 2011, Mr. Nasser served as Director of DPI’s Outreach Division. He joined DPI in 2006 as Director of the UN Information Centre in Cairo and then served as Director of the UN Information Service in Vienna from 2008 to 2011. From April to August 2012 and from August 2014 to February 2015, he was Acting Head of DPI. Born in 1962, Mr. Nasser speaks English and Arabic. He is married with three children.
