Since December 2nd, 2005 Ziyafat Asgarov is the First Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly of Azerbaijan. Z. Asgarov was born on October 24th, 1963 in Ashaghı Uzunoba village of Nakhchivan (now Babek) Region of Azerbaijan. He graduated cum laude from Azerbaijan State University. He was awarded with “Shohret” (“Glory”) Orderand with an honorary medal of the National Assembly. Professor Z. Asgarov has a PhD in law. He is an author of various textbooks, manuals and dozens of scientific publications. He is fluent also in Russian and French.In 1995 he was a member of the working group of the commission drafting the first national Constitution of the Republic of Azerbaijan. From November 24th, 2000 to December 2nd, 2005 he served as the Deputy Speaker. He was also the Chairman of the Security and Defence Committee of the National Assembly until November 24th, 2015. Since November 24th, 2015 Z. Asgarov is the Chairman of the Defence, Security and Anti-Corruption Committee of the National Assembly and head of the Azerbaijani delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly. He is married and has two children.
