Azerbaijan has Launched “Peace4culture” Global Campaign with UN Alliance of Civilizations and ICESCO

Global communities understand well the role that culture, heritage and identity can bring to the building of peace and how each and all of these can bring positive influence around shared values and common interests. The destruction of physical infrastructure, of heritage, of buildings and artefacts, of institutions and communities yields irreplaceable loss to humanity and actions that are impossible to overturn. Therefore, recently the Government of Azerbaijan launched the new international initiative #Peace4Culture Global Call in partnership with UNAOC and ICESCO.

On June 23, 2021 the Presentation of the “Peace for culture” global campaign has been held in Baku accompanied with high-level panel with High Representative for the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) Miguel Angel Moratinos. Addressing the event, Azerbaijani Culture Minister Anar Karimov noted that holding ”Peace for Culture” global campaign is a historic moment. No doubts that, such campaigns going to be even more efficient in application practical solutions and raising awareness. We highly appreciate the international stakeholders supporting the call and taking a step forward in promotion of peace.

He added that this global campaign intends protection of cultural heritage through peace, building peaceful and lasting peace-loving societies and strengthening international peace systems, to study the role of peace in the development of culture along with the role of culture in achieving peace, as well as conveying to the international community that the revival life and culture after the achievement of peace in the liberated territories can be an example for other regions.

“At the same time, it is a call for that no culture anywhere on the planet would encounter vandalism,” the minister added. “This global campaign envisages the study of the role of peace in the development of culture.” High Representative for the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) Miguel Angel Moratinos said that Azerbaijan addressed with this new initiative and he responded to this immediately: “We should find mechanism and tools to respond to today’s reality and problems. “We can build a better society; we can live together in peace.” ICESCO Director General, Dr. Salim Al Malik expressed his full support to the “Peace for culture” global campaign in his video messages.
